Sugar

Commonly called Sugar Ants, Odorous House Ants (OHA), are named for a sour odor that comes from them when squished! OHA for short, are the small, mostly black ants that visit in early spring for a carbohydrate meal and like to show up on kitchen counters. They generally are found after rains in the spring, summer, and fall as well when nests are disturbed.  Their nests are spread out and very near the surface of the surrounding environment. Additionally they will nest under any debris in the yard. OHA are known to have multiple nesting sites and will break off a new colony if disturbed. Baiting and spraying are two of the most common ways to address the extermination of these ants.

Other Ants

Moisture Ants

Moisture ants colonize wood saturated with water in your home generally caused by roof or plumbing leaks. They can also be found where faulty siding and gutter systems may be allowing water into sill plates or wood near the foundation. Treatment methods and extermination consist of targeting sprays and correction of moisture problems.

Pavement Ants

Pavement ants are small ants that you see in and around cracks in sidewalks and paved areas. These ants generally do not come inside structures unless they are inhabiting an area from the outside that continues into the structure. This can happen with additions to homes or where newly paved areas meet up to foundations. Pavement ants do not harm structures but do swarm in summer months. If this happens inside a structure you will have flying ants all over the place. These ants can be treated by finding the entrance to the underground nest and treating it with spray applied pesticide.

Velvety Tree Ant

Velvety tree ants are the little ants you picture spoiling your picnic. They are generally out in the environment foraging and have a unique knack for finding your crumbs and things you leave behind. Living in dead spaces of trees these ants find their way into homes searching for sweets to bring back to the queen. Treatment includes barrier sprays to the home and cutting back of vegetation next to the structure.
